Visit to Austria-September 2011

May 4, 2011

September 6, 2011 to September 13, 2011

On 6th September the Choir flew from Manchester to Munich then on by coach to Söll in the Austrian Tirol. They were there for a week. The highlight of the visit was the concert in the beautiful broque parish church on Sunday 11th September. This was an important event for the Choir as ten years earlier on 11th September 2001 that fateful day in history, the Choir were at Söll Parish Church giving a similar concert. The compere Howard Hughes brought this coincidnce to the attention of the large audience and before singing the final item they were asked to stand for a few moments of reflection in memory of those who died on Seven Eleven.

The Choir sang several well known male voice choir pieces and one in particular was an arrangement by Gwilym Lewis our deputy conductor,of Tros y Garreg the beautiful Welsh folk song-this was arranged especially for this trip by Gwilym.

Our soloist was Gareth Hughes (euphonium) whose choice of pieces and performance were highly acclaimed and appreciated by the audience.

We were joned by Kevin Grafton of Sevenoaks in Kent who played several modern English organ pieces to contrast with our more traditional pieces. Kevin joined us for two songs namely American Trilogy and Morte Criste which brought the audience to their feet!

At the end the Choir, accompanist Lowri Prys Roberts Williams and the conductor James Griffiths were given a standing ovation. The compere Howard Hughes introduced the items in German and English, the stage manager Norman Evans kept everyone on their toes in a most professional way  to good effect.

During the visit to Soell the weather was exceptionally fine and two trips were arranged one to Salzburg and the other to Berchtesgaden where we visited Hitler’s mountain retreat the Eagle’s Nest.

The entire tour had been arranged by Hugh Harry Williams and we are indebted to Hugh for all his fine arrangements as usual.
